Frelling in Fading Suns , [oWoD] Translating old manuscript, example of how I deal with extended actions

[MRQ] Character creation seemed to simple, so let's try it out!

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 6 months ago
Mongoose Publishing's RuneQuest is one of my new games. It is a light book and easy to read so I thought I'll read it at work when ever I got time for reviewing it. After I read character creation section, I wanted to try it out. It seemed to be really simple and fast. And I only have this one book, so basically only human characters are available. So, no duck for me. Let's start. First I roll characteristics. 4D6, drop lowest and add remaining together. Except Size and intelligence where you roll 3DD6, drop lowest, add remaining +6. That is because human are average in intelligenc... more »

Twitter, updated YDIN logo and YDIN talk

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 6 months ago
I can now be found at Twitter. @Thaumiel_Nerub. Basically I will use my Twitter for roleplaying and Cradle of Rabies related tweets and to follow interesting people in roleplaying hobby. I also made a quick new logo for my YDIN to use for my Twitter profile picture. It looks like this: I have had trouble coming up with a good catchphrase. I have puzzled with it for some time trying to come up with something really cool. Everything sounded silly or clumsy. When I started to create my Twitter profile picture I made box with even sides. Wrote YDIN and saw a big black space. Then I wr... more »

Games I have played

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 6 months ago
*Do YOU dear reader have a list of games you have played in your blog or website? Be free to share it in comments section!* Oh gosh, I don't remember all the roleplaying games I have played from the beginning, but I try to list as many as possible. I most definately will forget maybe few or even tons of them, but here are what I remember now. I did use this list from Wikipedia to help me remember all the games I have played. Some of them sounded and felt really familiar by name but I didn't include them as I am not 100% sure if I have played them. I am also not sure if that list ... more »

Why is it so hard to end a campaign?

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 6 months ago
Still running V:tM and other plans are naturally delayed because of that. It's just so hard for me to end an open ended campaign what is a bit of sandboxed also. I have succesfully ran like one campaign with clear ending and it was Call of Cthulhu set in modern age. There was clear goal and a story. Of course actual playing did change it and affect it but still I knew exactly when to end it. Different it is with Vampire: the Masquerade. I enjoy playing it so much I cannot end it when it could story wise end. I just continue, open new hooks and so on. I planned, that it would be arou... more »

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 6 months ago
Yesterday I got note from post that my order's been arrived. I hope I have time today to fetch them. Maybe around lunch hour. I am not that familiar with the products but I am a collector and price was right. So I had to get them. I will post in more detail about them when I get to open the box. The games are: - HARP - Lord of the Rings - Mongoose Runequest - Ravenloft Campaign setting I did do a little bit of research on those titles using RPG.net reviews and am quite excited about them. Maybe not that much about LotR but I thought that some kind of roleplaying game ... more »

Warp shitted

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
Sorry for bad language of this post, but even imaginary science characters do curse if it suits their character concept. So... here is a term for science fiction roleplaying games: *Warp Shitted*. *I came up with this term when I saw term "sharp witted" on one site and just twisted it to warp shitted. After a short laugh it all was clear to me. * * * Some people cannot stand warping. They get nausea and or headache. This is called "physiological short term symptoms of warping". But generally in slang, it is just called "*warp shitted"*. You can use it in sentence like this: "Oh man, ... more »

Time in fantasy games

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
Here are few tips for GM how to handle fantasy terms of time. In fantasy games months, weekdays and even hours and minutes might have different names than in our real world. It gives some detail in setting, but I also see some problems in it. They do give detail to setting, but is it necessary for players to learn this new time system to keep track on "what time it is"? *Years* Years are basically simple. As it is fantasy, you cannot compare time line to ours. So in fantasy setting it could be year 2300 but they don't fly with space ships as it cannot be compared to our time line. A... more »

Currently my hobby

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
Few things and thoughts what I am currently doing in rpg hobby. Saw some cool rpg books on this rpg forum market, made an offer and after it a deal. I probably wont play them, but I do collect games so I couldn't resist. I am not going into details what those titles are but will totally post about them after I get them. I can say, that one of those is really well known fantasy role playing game I am not familiar with; another I got because of Tolkien's influence on mainstream fantasy; third is different version of one really popular fantasy role playing game I played when I was a kid... more »

Creating a character with a guy totally unfamiliar to roleplaying games using YDIN

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
Next post right after this will be how totally new person to roleplaying games created his first p&p character ever using YDIN. It is really interesting how he managed to make the character even though there are some freedom to create character and some parts you need to use your own ideas. Read next post to find out, how it happened! That text is from my previous post. In this post I will tell in detail how a friend of mine new to roleplaying games created a character with me for YDIN. This was just a test drive to see how simple YDIN character creation is. (Originally I posted th... more »

YDIN character creation, Candy Storm

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
My online friend likes name Candy Storm, and I couldn't but help thinking about a concept about a stripper from Quentin Tarantino styled movie. Sexy, beautiful, agile but lethal. I decided to create character Candy Storm for YDIN. So here is detailed character creation for imaginary character, Candy Storm. *Background Details* * * I only got name for this character, and idea about Quentin Tarantino movie like setting. I also feel, that Sin City could be great style for the city Candy Storm is living in. Ruthless and brutal where law is not better than criminals. Streets are violent ... more »

Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and a word or two about Savage Worlds

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
Watched Mummy: tomb of the Dragon Emperor in last two nights. I did not like it. But I do see that it could be nice action packed roleplaying adventure. Maybe using Savage Worlds rules. Problem in the movie was that it mixed pulp action with mummy with ancient China kung-fu. I think it was when all these Chinese kung-fu movies were hot so Mummy crew jumped to that bandwagon. It didn't work for me. I do like some Chinese kung-fu (wire-fu) movies, but this was too much of a mix-up. Anyways even though some movies might be stupid as a movie story, they might or could work really wel... more »

Why I like the computer aided gaming I use so much?

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 7 months ago
How do I play at home today? I only have one resident player at the moment. As I live with her, we do play at our home. It is easy. Schedules are easy to work out and we can get really fast to play a game. But we have a twist how we play. We use messenger for that. But why? Years ago we tried for fun to play by writing. We only got one PC and just opened text editor and wrote what player and gamemaster would normally say in the course of game. I wrote description and player wrote how her character reacted that. We decided to try that out because we were curious would we get more det... more »

How different valued coins were abstract back then

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 8 months ago
ANKH, first game I both played and owned. Currency was in three different coins. Ten copper coins equals one silver coin. Ten silver coins equal one gold coin. Really, really simple. But what made it a bit funny and abstract when I think about it now. Obviously, if something cost 2 silver coins and 5 copper coins and character didn't have change, he payed three silver coins and got 5 copper coins in return. That makes perfect sense. But one thing was bizarre. If character had 8 copper coins and got 5 copper coins more, magically those 13 copper coins transformed into one silver coin... more »

Few adventures and stories I've GMed and played in a nutshell

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 8 months ago
One night I was remembering all games I've been involved and there are like hundreds of them. Some I don't remember at all, some distantly and some really clearly. Here I will write some of games I have been in. Not that detailed descriptions but just short overviews. *Games I have Gamemastered* * * *Vampire: The Masquerade - Night Speed Children* Chronicle about Toreador who wanted more. Game was about gaining respect from other clans as a Toreador proving to be something else than just an emotional and fragile artist. Also contained a lot of tuning cars. Character clashed with Sabb... more »

Paraller universes - the setting of dreams

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 8 months ago
This is just a draft of idea I got. It is not finished, detailed or thinked throughout. The idea is to use in a roleplaying game, campaign or even just one adventure. It is not rules specific, so could be used with almost any system. *Parallel Universes And Multiverse* * * First you might want to check this Wikipedia article to get some idea about this topic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiverse There's lots of to read and I will just pick an idea or two from here and there. But you might want to refer to that Wikipedia article for more detailed article or if you are really inter... more »

[oWoD] Translating old manuscript, example of how I deal with extended actions

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 8 months ago
Extended actions are those where you need certain number of cumulative successes to finish your task. Usually long term tasks like repairing a machine with several different parts in process or translating a manuscript where are several different sections. That manuscript translation is an example I am going to use here. *Core System For Extended Actions* * * I have to say that I've played Vampire: the Masquerade (most used oWoD system for me) so many years that I am not any more sure what is a house rule and what is written in the book. oWoD has evolved to this point how I play it ... more »

I need some equipment to be able to write while in bed

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 8 months ago
This post is about moments of inspiration mixed with generally being lazy and wanting maximum comfort. I do have a tabletop computer, but sometimes I just don't want to sit at desk. It is not the nicest position and especially after a long day I want to be in comfortable position. Even my urge to write this blog or continue one of my projects is not strong enough that I would always sit there. But I also have a laptop but there are two problems. Usually in evenings my girlfriend is using it surfing internet or watching videos as I do something else like read. Even though that was av... more »

Frelling in Fading Suns

Thaumiel Nerub at Cradle of Rabies - From role to games - 8 months ago
I am currently editing and blogging my Fading Suns campaign's game sessions to my campaigns blog (you can find it here in Finnish, but google translate can give you a hint what's going on). When saving sessions to blog I found that we use a lot of word "*frell*" when playing characters. Some of you know that frell is word from tv series Farscape and it is basically an space equivalent for F-bomb. Usually characters in my games don't curse that much if it doesn't suit for character or NPC concept. People speak quite strictly in that manner. But in Farscape word frell was used quite f... more »
